Which separators to use with title tags?

More and more SEOs are using separators like pipes, dashes, commas, etc when writing title tags. (Exclude underscores from the list, which are used as concatenators.)

Which of these separators perform better?

From time to time some SEO “experts” and their cheerleaders promote the idea that a particular separator performs better over others. See the following link:

http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2154469/How-to-Write-Title-Tags-For-Search-Engine-Optimization

And that is despite the fact that Google’s Matt Cutts has mentioned in two different videos that there is no real significative advantage of using one over the other. These videos are available at the following links:

My take?

I would like to see an analytical study supporting the facts. I believe this is reasonable to ask. Don’t you think so?

  1. If I was analyzing the text, I would strip all separators in the very first step. Especially in such short piece of text as titlle tag is, any separators create useless noise if I am trying to find the “essence” of the text…

  2. Thanks for sharing this good info. Many SEOs nowadays are just into copying what they heard from another SEO person and so they really have no idea why they are doing what they are doing. In the case of title tags, many SEOs used this “|” as separators or “,”. But it really doesn’t matter. What matter most is that the site provides good content that internet users are looking for.

  3. Thank you for stopping by.

I agree. While a pipe might grab the attention of some readers, there is no real evidence that it makes a difference from the search engines side.
